With business process management (BPM), you start by designing and modelling your business processes, and then you deploy and execute them in one or several IT systems, or using an integration platform that coordinates and orchestrates all your organization's IT porfolio, along with your employees work and external service interaction.

Using process mining, you can discover the real process execution, from data that your IT systems records, when your processes are being executed.

You don't even have to know or have the model of your processes to analyse them. Process mining just uses the history log from your IT systems and automatically discovers the real executed process to you. Also, it enhances the model with "hidden" knowledge about the process, such as business rules, or performance indicators.
